🚨 Optimizing biopsy sampling in Barrett’s esophagus surveillance:
The ultimate goal of Barrett’s esophagus surveillance is early detection of dysplasia and esophageal cancer — but this can be extremely challenging.

👉 Dysplastic lesions are often invisible and subtle, making them hard to spot even for experienced endoscopists.

🧠 To minimize missed diagnoses, guidelines recommend four-quadrant biopsies every 2 cm.

But here’s the question:
Can we further optimize tissue sampling to increase diagnostic yield?
📊 Beaufort et al. showed that performing single biopsies with the “turn-and-suction” technique significantly increases the amount of tissue obtained compared to other methods.

Here’s what they found 🧩
Double-biopsy + advance-and-close: 2.77 mm² (2.44–3.09)
Double-biopsy + turn-and-suction: 2.61 mm² (2.29–2.93)
Single-biopsy + advance-and-close: 3.14 mm² (2.81–3.46)
⭐ Single-biopsy + turn-and-suction: 3.54 mm² (3.22–3.86)
💡 Even small technical refinements can make a big difference in the quality of tissue sent to the pathologist — and ultimately, in patient outcomes.
