Should cholangioscopy be performed during the index ERCP? At #esgedays2026, this high-level debate session will tackle one of the most controversial and practice-changing topics in biliary endoscopy.

Chaired by George Webster (United Kingdom) and Livia Archibugi (Italy), the session will critically explore:
- The role of cholangioscopy in indeterminate biliary strictures, including tissue acquisition, morphological assessment, and comparison with conventional ERCP techniques (brush cytology and forceps biopsy)
- Timing and cost-effectiveness of cholangioscopy during index ERCP
- Patient selection, technical strategies, and adverse events in the management of complex biliary stones, including large balloon dilation, mechanical lithotripsy, and cholangioscopy-assisted lithotripsy

🔹 Debate 1: Cholangioscopy for indeterminate biliary strictures
For: Torsten Beyna (Germany)
Against: Geoffroy Vanbiervliet (France)

🔹 Debate 2: Cholangioscopy (± lithotripsy) for complex biliary stones
For: Gavin Johnson (United Kingdom)
Against: Tomislav Bokun (Croatia)
With expert panels, real-world perspectives, and opposing views from leading endoscopists across Europe, this session will help you refine decision-making, balance innovation with evidence, and apply cholangioscopy where it truly adds value.

👉 A must-attend session for ERCP practitioners facing complex biliary strictures and stones in daily clinical practice.
